EXPLORE RECORD SHOPS IN GEORGIA

Georgia might be the most music-dense state in the South: Macon raised Little Richard, James Brown grew up in Augusta, the Allman Brothers built Capricorn Records out of Macon in the early 1970s, Athens kicked off the American indie revolution through R.E.M. and the B-52’s, and Atlanta turned OutKast and the Dungeon Family into a trap dynasty that still runs hip-hop in the 2020s. Wuxtry Records hits 50 years in 2026 with its Athens and Decatur locations, the original Athens shop being where Peter Buck met Michael Stipe in 1980. Atlanta’s Criminal Records co-founded Record Store Day, Wax ‘N’ Facts and Fantasyland anchor Little Five Points, and Macon’s Habersham CD’s has been running since 1971. Savannah, Augusta, Marietta, and the smaller towns add their own shops across roughly 50 communities. Pull off 75 between Atlanta and Macon, swing through Athens for a Wuxtry pilgrimage, and see what the Peach State has been keeping in the bins.

BEYOND GEORGIA: VINYL JOURNEYS FROM THE PEACH STATE

As the last track spins in the Peach State, every shop you flipped through today is just one verse in a much bigger Southern catalog. The Blue Ridge runs north toward the Smokies, I-75 connects Atlanta to Macon to Tallahassee like a record-store conveyor belt, and Georgia’s five bordering states put more soul, country, indie, and trap shops within a half-day drive than almost anywhere south of New York.

North Carolina Record Stores: Head north into North Carolina, where Asheville’s Harvest and Static Age cover mountain folk through weirdo punk, the Triangle’s All Day Records and Sorry State hold the college-rock and rare-soul flame in Carrboro and Raleigh, and the Outer Banks stores keep the weekend beach soundtrack stocked.

Tennessee Record Stores: Cross north into Tennessee, where Memphis still spins Sun, Stax, and Three 6 Mafia in roughly equal measure, Nashville’s East Side stocks outlaw country alongside Third Man pressings, and Bristol still claims the 1927 Bristol Sessions as the Big Bang of Country Music.

South Carolina Record Stores: Travel east to South Carolina, where Charleston’s downtown shops carry beach music and lowcountry soul, Columbia’s college crates hide punk and indie pressings on the cheap, and Myrtle Beach’s boardwalk stores keep the family-vacation weeks stocked with one more crate to flip.

Florida Record Stores: Drop south into Florida, where Miami’s Sweat Records carries the city’s Latin and bass lineage, Tampa Bay’s Bananas Records and Sound Exchange hold the deepest dig in the Southeast, and Orlando’s Park Ave CDs has anchored the city for forty years.

Alabama Record Stores: Roll west into Alabama, where Muscle Shoals shops keep the FAME and Swampers lineage stocked, Birmingham’s Seasick Records and Renaissance anchor the city’s punk and soul circuit, and the Mobile Gulf Coast picks up where the Florida Panhandle leaves off.

California Record Stores: Fly west to California, where LA’s Amoeba Hollywood is one of the world’s most celebrated record stores, the Bay Area’s Rasputin and Amoeba Berkeley run a parallel dig, and the LA-Atlanta hip-hop industry axis keeps Georgia producers making regular California pilgrimages.

At Record Store Directory, every state line is an invitation to keep exploring. Share your finds, connect with fellow collectors, and chase down that next unforgettable album, because the perfect record is always closer than you think.

Happy hunting, and we’ll see you in the next stack!

Georgia RSD FAQ

How many record stores are in Georgia?
Georgia has roughly 99 active record stores spread across the state. Atlanta alone holds thirteen shops, Savannah carries seven on the coast, Augusta adds six, and Athens and Marietta each anchor four-shop clusters. The northern Georgia shops in Blue Ridge and Ellijay sit near the Tennessee line, Columbus and the West Georgia shops border Alabama, and Savannah and Brunswick on the coast sit just over the river from the South Carolina shops in Beaufort and Charleston.
What are the best record stores in Atlanta?
Atlanta is one of the most historically significant record-store cities in the country. Criminal Records in Little Five Points, owned by Eric Levin, is one of the co-birthplaces of Record Store Day, with Levin among the indie store owners at the 2007 founding meeting. Wax ‘N’ Facts, also in Little Five Points, is the longest-running Atlanta indie. Fantasyland Records stocks more than 50,000 titles, and Moods Music is the city’s R&B and soul anchor. Newer arrivals include Waterloo Sunset Records, which relocated to the Battery ATL district in 2026, and Black Habit Records.
What about Athens and the R.E.M. record-shop legacy?
Athens is the birthplace of R.E.M., the B-52s, Pylon, and a defining 1980s American indie scene, and the town’s record-shop history runs through it. Wuxtry Records on East Clayton Street is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2026 and is famously the store where Peter Buck worked as a clerk and met Michael Stipe. The Wuxtry Decatur sister shop opened in 1978 and continues to anchor that side of the metro. Low Yo Yo Stuff Records and Shadebeast Records round out the Athens scene.
What are the best record stores in Savannah?
Savannah’s seven-shop cluster covers the historic-district trade. Graveface Records & Curiosities on Bull Street pairs records with the label-and-oddities side of owner Ryan Graveface’s operations. Throwback GOATs on Abercorn Street relocated in 2026 to its current address. Relentless Records, Coastal Empire Records, and the two Rody’s locations (Audio Warehouse plus the downtown Rody’s Records) fill out the historic district circuit.
Best record stores in Augusta, Macon, and Middle Georgia?
Middle and East Georgia hold a strong second-tier scene. In Augusta, Grantski Records, Psychotronic Records, and Side A Vinyl anchor the downtown trade. In Macon, Habersham CD’s Record & Tape Shop has been a 1971-origin institution for over 45 years, with Fresh Produce Records and Vertigo Vinyl rounding out the city. Records Galore in Clarkston has been a 40-plus-year suburban Atlanta used-record anchor.
Does Georgia participate in Record Store Day?
Yes, and Georgia is foundational to the event. Criminal Records owner Eric Levin was one of the indie store owners who founded Record Store Day at the 2007 CIMS gathering, making Atlanta one of RSD’s birthplace cities. Wuxtry Records in Athens and Decatur, Wax ‘N’ Facts and Fantasyland Records in Atlanta, and Graveface Records & Curiosities in Savannah are all heavy Record Store Day destinations every April.
Where to dig for Atlanta hip-hop, R&B, and Southern rap records?
Atlanta is the current capital of American hip-hop, home to labels from LaFace and So So Def to the Dungeon Family, Grand Hustle, and Quality Control. Moods Music in the Old Fourth Ward is the city’s R&B and neo-soul anchor and has been since the early 2000s. Criminal Records and Black Habit Records both stock the hip-hop and Black-music catalogue with care, and JB’s Record Lounge handles the listening-bar side of the trade.
Where can you find rare and collectible vinyl in Georgia?
Fantasyland Records in Atlanta runs more than 50,000 titles across new and used, with a deep collector wall behind the counter. Wuxtry Records in Athens has been pulling estate collections for 50 years and is the obvious destination for college-rock first pressings and oddities. Wax ‘N’ Facts in Little Five Points and Records Galore in Clarkston both keep premium walls, and Graveface Records & Curiosities in Savannah carries the label’s own boutique pressings alongside the wider catalog.
